Saturday 11/16

Organized Mayhem: Comics, Acting and Writing with the Yuan Twins’
11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Matt and John Yuan are actors who have appeared in movies such as Observe and Report and television shows like Arrested Development, Rules of Engagement, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. They are also comic creators who write and draw “Love Town”, “Inspector Oh”, and “Serving Supes.” How did these two turn their love of role playing games into a career in the movies and comics? Find out as they talk about their past and present projects and how they all relate to those funny little multi-sided dice and those pen-and-paper games of yesteryear!

Designing Over-the-Knee Boots

Learn basics of pattern draping from NYC fashion designer Pamela Ptak! Working with a volunteer from the audience, Pamela will drape a boot in cloth on their leg while explaining techniques used in the garment industry. She’ll tell how to add seams, details & sew your boots.

The Joker has been a staple in DC Comics for decades. Now, he has a very successful movie! Come listen to Dr. Suzana Flores as she breaks down the psychology and mythology of Arthur Fleck. Is he the villain? An anti-hero? Does he defy all description? Since we live in a society, we get to discuss it!

Venom: Lethal Protector

In 1993, a mini-series was published that redefined a Marvel anti-hero. This story became a cornerstone for events happening decades later. Come meet the creators who helped mark Venom’s life as something beyond Spider-Man’s enemy, as well as the team that birthed Carnage just one year earlier! Levin, a creative, legal, and representative army of one about what went into bringing to life such projects as Road to Perdition, Hellboy, and most recently Preacher on AMC, the hit series on Amazon Prime The Boys, and the upcoming Grimjack series currently being developed by the Russo Brothers.

1980’s Marvel

The Eighties were a fun decade full of parachute pants, pastel colors, and Saturday morning cartoons. There were also editors at Marvel working hard to keep pushing characters to new heights. Come listen to Carl Potts and Al Milgrom talk about a formative decade that saw the rise of the Moon Knight, the Punisher, and Alpha Flight, some wild years for the Incredible Hulk, and the formation of the West Coast Avengers. Get ready for a nostalgia trip!

Inside the art of Visual Storytelling

A comics writer, artist, teacher and editor, Carl Potts, will walk you through a seminar he has given to Princeton University, DC Comics, Google, Blizzard, San Diego Comic-Con, the Society of Illustrators, and many more. This seminar is based on years of experience of Marvel Comics and his own book, The DC Comics Guide to Creating Comics: Inside the Art of Visual Storytelling.

Spider-Man Spotlight

Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable characters in all of pop-culture. Come listen to creators that have helped shape some of his wildest stories and enemies. First Comics started in 1983 as the first publisher of creator-owned comics. In the over three decades since then, the landscape of comics has changed but First Comics’ commitment to creator owned comics has not. Learn about where First started, where it went, and where it’s going in this panel discussion with First Comics’ editor-in-chief and publisher Ken F. Levin as well as Steve Stern and Dan Cote (Zen: Intergalactic Ninja) and the Fillbach Brothers (Captain Freebird, Shotgun to Sugarland).
